Our History

A tradition dating back to 1819.

The MJLF tradition dates back to The Mallorys of Mystic, Connecticut. Founded in 1979, MJLF has grown to be one of the premier ship brokerage companies in the United States.

  1. 1819

    The Mallorys of Mystic, Connecticut, begin as sail makers.

  2. 1945

    The Mallory family becomes America’s largest ship owners.

  3. 1979

    MJLF founded by Charles Mallory, Sam Jones, and Charlie Lynch in New York City with a six-person staff, focused on spot chartering, period chartering, and sale & purchase — built around the client.

  4. 1987

    Expanded overseas via new strategic joint ventures and contracted the first double-hull tankers for a large global oil company — including 6 Aframaxes, the first STL shuttle ship, and three deep-water drill ships.

  5. 1994

    Concluded 4 new-building contracts with 12-year time charters, total deal value over $650MM.

  6. 2001

    Completed first $1Bn deal co-developing a new tanker design to address refining constraints — secured yard space for 3 Suezmaxes and 2 Aframaxes with 12-year time charters.

  7. 2015

    Opened a new Houston office, expanding the firm’s footprint.

  8. 2017

    John Stichter nominated as MJLF’s fourth President. Over the following year the firm invests in infrastructure across technology, people, and processes — moving to a flagship office in Stamford, CT.

  9. 2018

    Total new-building contracts since inception exceed 230 across Tanker, Dry Cargo, Bulker, Container, and Offshore vessels.
